KNOXVILLE, TN – Lisa Shuttle loved her cats, perhaps a bit too much. Last April, she had one of the city’s biggest cat parties ever: Kittenpalooza, a kitten festival celebrating America’s feline youth. The event was named after the word Lollapalooza, which means “something outstanding or unusual.” Festival tickets were free, but now Ms. Shuttle and the 81 attending cats are now paying a steeper price.

Kittenpalooza actually took place in two separate buildings: Shuttle’s home, and a nearby abandoned store. When neighbors complained, police investigated and halted the party, arresting all of the cats in attendance as well as the party’s organizer, Ms. Shuttle herself. Several cats were found to be walking around in a drunken stance, many were high on catnip, and a few had injuries from an activity called “moshing” wherein kittens threw their bodies against one another.

Ms. Shuttle has plead guilty to charges of animal cruelty and has been ordered to undergo mental evaluation as well as give 150 hours of her time towards community service. Additionally, she must repay Friends of the Sullivan County Animal Shelter approximately eight thousand dollars for veterinary and other expenses incurred as a result of the incident.
