Dear Catnabbit,

How can I tell if a cat is pregnant?

Sincerely,
Biting My Claws in Idaho

Dear Biting My Claws in Idaho,

Here are some early signs of pregnancy in cats:

  • Knitting booties in sets of 4.
  • Craving pickles and fried chicken.
  • Has given up “walking” and taken up “waddling.”
  • Eats enough for five, but is as fat as two cats.
  • Refuses to clean out the litterbox for “health reasons.”
  • Is getting in arguments on the internet over whether or not cats should bottle feed kittens.
  • Collects stacks of tiny cloth diapers that she says she’ll use; no one ever really does.
  • All the neighborhood toms are absent and left no forwarding address.

Remember that pregnancy is a very troubling time in a cat’s life, especially if the tom is not in the picture. Don’t hassle her for not having a ring on her paw, and don’t ask if you can touch her belly!

The best way to find out whether a cat is pregnant is to get her to pee on a stick, and if a kitten falls on the stick, she is, or recently was, pregnant.
