Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Paws,
Although we at Catnabbit try to bring you the lighter side of news, we have found that it would be very important to share this with you. There is currently a pet food recall that could affect you. Please check your cans of food to make sure that they were not manufactured by Menu Foods. Most cat foods these days are manufactured by another company than the brand that is prominently listed on the label. The manufacturer or distributor is listed on the back of the can in small print.
There have been at least 10 cats that have suffered and died from Kidney Failure as a result of eating the “cuts and gravy” foods supplied by Menu Foods. Here is a full list of brands that are affected, although we’ve heard reports that there may be more, such as Iams and Eukanuba. This affects CANNED FOOD and one dry food so far. The full list is below but some have been added in the comments (see #56 for example).
Wondering what to do about this recall? First, throw away the bad food or call the phone number to find out how to send it back as part of the recall. Second, scroll to the bottom of this post for a link to the FDA to report adverse reactions to the recalled food.

Recall of Pet Foods Manufactured by Menu Foods, Inc.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been informed that Menu Foods, Inc., a private-label pet food manufacturer based in Statesville, Ontario, Canada, is recalling all its “cuts and gravy” style dog and cat food produced at its facility in Emporia, Kansas between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The products are sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by the manufacturer and by tasting trials conducted by the manufacturer. There has been a small number of reported instances of cats and dogs in the United States that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product. Ten deaths, one dog and nine cats, have reported at this time. The firm has undertaken extensive testing of the pet food products in question, but to date has been unable to find the source of the problem.
The products are packaged in cans and pouches under numerous brand names and are marketed nationwide by many pet food retailers including Ahold USA Inc., Kroger Company, Safeway, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., PetSmart, Inc., and Pet Valu, Inc.
Menu Foods, Inc. has identified the potentially contaminated products on the Internet at www.menufoods.com/recall. Consumers who have any of these products should immediately stop feeding them to their pets. Dogs or cats who have consumed the suspect feed and show signs of kidney failure (such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) should consult with their veterinarian. Menu Foods, Inc. is notifying retailers by telephone and mail and is arranging for the return of all recalled products.
FDA is conducting an investigation and working with Menu Foods, Inc. to ensure the effectiveness of the recall. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-866-895-2708. Consumers who wish to report adverse actions or other problems can go to http://www.FDA.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html to contact the FDA complaint coordinator in their state.

Some have been asking how to know if their cat has been affected by this. The easiest way to find out is to go to the veterinarian and get a renal function test. This is a blood test which is relatively inexpensive. If you catch it early, it will save you a lot of pain and suffering, and you will have a greater chance of conquering your kidney failure if you catch it BEFORE symptoms show up. If symptoms arise then the situation is an emergency and the costs will be higher and the disease more painful and more difficult to treat or cure. So please contact your veterinarian if you have ANY concern about your feline well-being. This is a very serious thing and this kind of medical advice can not be substituted over the internet. So please please please contact your veterinarian if you suspect kidney disease.
Another question we have received several times through email is whether their particular brand of food is affected.
We checked and Friskies canned foods are distributed by Master Foods, not Menu foods, so for the time being we are assuming that Friskies by Purina are safe.
Whiskas is distributed by Mars Foods and also not affected by the recall (to our knowledge).
According to the Purina website only their mighty dog and ol roy are affected.
Only ten cats died? Bull sh**! They need to stop spreading this outright lie. My cat died, and he’s not in their count. I imagine dozens of others have died as well. My other cat is in the hospital fighting for her life. Overnight, another cat and a dog were brought in to the clinic with renal failure. I want my cat counted. I don’t want his death to have been for naught. He deserved better.
I seriously NEED to know IF….Friskies cat food is affected as we know of at the current time…any updates to the above? AND…what about Nine Lives which is by Heinz…any info there? I have nine cats and am struggling to feed them AND hopefully keep them alive here??? They are hungry as we speak…
Thanks! Charolette
Southern Writer — That’s terrible, I am so sorry that this happened. We want to get the information out in the open without the filters that Menu Foods seems to be putting on their press releases. Even their press release says not for the news press. The list of foods they gave doesn’t seem to explicitly state all of the foods that are affected so we are having to find out bit by bit from the other brands that purchased their food from Menu Foods.
I hope that the information posted here can at least help people get their cats to the veterinarian for treatment ASAP so that it does not become a critical emergency where more and more cats suffer and die. Again I’m very sorry for your loss. Your words are welcome here and we encourage you and others to express yourselves so that everyone can understand what is going on and take action in their own lives.
Charolette, to the best of our knowledge Friskies and 9 Lives are not affected. We’ll post updates as we find out more.
Here’s the list of Nutro foods which are recalled. Nutro is offering a full refund for all of their recalled products.

P&G Pet Care Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu Foods’ Nationwide U.S. and Canadian Recall of Specific Canned and Small Foil Pouch ‘Wet’ Cat and Dog Foods
Contact:
Kurt Weingand, D.V.M., Ph.D.
937-264-7676
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Dayton, OH — March 16, 2007 — In response to the recent Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, P&G Pet Care has announced a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada on specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch “wet” cat and dog food products manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia, Kansas plant with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197. This voluntary recall is part of a larger product recall by Menu Foods Inc., a contract manufacturer that makes a small portion of canned and foil pouch ‘wet’ cat foods for Iams and Eukanuba as well as other non-P&G brands. There have been a small number of reported cases of cats from the US (none in Canada) becoming sick and developing signs of kidney failure. The signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. P&G Pet Care has received no case reports involving dogs.
This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately, and consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in their pet. All Iams and Eukanuba products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-882-1591 or visit http://www.Iams.com and http://www.Eukanuba.com for details.
To read can product codes, refer to the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch. The date and plant codes appear in the third group of numbers, beginning an 11-digit sequence. See http://www.Iams.com and http://www.Eukanuba.com for illustrated details.
P&G Pet Care is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount in the mission of Iams and Eukanuba. Tests of some affected product have not revealed the cause of sickness, and testing will continue until a better understanding of the facts has been achieved. All other canned and small foil wet pouch products produced at other plants are not affected by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba “dry” products are not manufactured at Menu Foods and not affected by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba biscuits, treats and sauces are not affected by this issue.
P&G Pet Care has informed the Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on this issue. The company regrets any inconvenience to its consumers and retail customers.
According to our research, Meow Mix is not affected because Meow Mix supposedly manufactures their own food.
We have received some emails about what to do if you are in Canada.
Since Menu Foods has most of their plants in the US and one of their plants is in Canada, there is probably two routes you can pursue. The FDA takes complaints at the URL we linked above. As for pursuing things on your side of the Canadian border, here are some possible locations to check:

Health Canada - Advisories, warnings & recalls: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/media/advisories-avis/index_e.html

My 1 1/2 year old kitty was diagnosed with kidney failure last week, he was eating the Iams cat food that has been recalled. Menu Foods has made it difficult to contact them, they are disgusting.
My healthy cat who stays indoors passed away this last week from renal failure. We had blood work done in November and he was fine! Then in February, he showed signs of renal failure! I am disgusted at the idea this company did not test the raw products going into the foods. My veterinarian was shocked at the results of the test! To me this should be a criminal act punishable by law. Is there nothing that can be done about a company that allows this to happen? At the very minimum, EVERY raw ingredient should be tested. The question also arises in my mind, if the wheat is bad for the wet food, what makes it not bad for the dry food?
My eight year old Maine Coon cat stopped eating and had all the other signs that just came out on the news. The vet says his condition is “guarded.” He went from 17 pounds to 9 pounds. It is impossible to find any information on the “menu foods” Web site other than a list of the foods. The one he ate was Nutro Max canned. It isn’t even on the list except as the pouch variety. I’ve already spent $700 on vet bills to try to save his life. How long was this covered up while beloved animals were being slowly poisoned? Why doesn’t the FDA have websites rather than just phone numbers to report how wide-spread this is? Are we all supposed to sit on “hold” in between trying to treat our pets?
alpo or kibbles and bits?
My cat Smokey passed away last night from kidney failure. She was 7 years old and was definately my baby. Unfortunely she loved Special Kitty pouched cat food. Too bad the food she loved to eat ended up killing her. It’s hard to believe how fast thier lives can ebb away, just a week ago she seemed so healthy.
There have to be more that 10 cats or dogs affected and we just are not hearing of them all. Our cat was put down last week, he ate only special kitty pouch food, I still have some here, with matching codes of those recalled. He quit eating, we thought he didnt like the food, so we bought another kind, that did no good, still refused to eat. We took him to a vet and it was too late, he had to be put down. The food he loved, killed him!!!!!
Upset that Menu Foods website only puts the names of foods & phone numbers that are busy all the time. What do pet owners do with the vet bills and the unopened food products.
Our condolences to the grieving household members of the beloved furry friends who have suffered from this gruesome food poisoning.
Call it by any other name, but it is poisoning nevertheless ! And we trust these producers to use good materials too, some of these brands are quite expensive which would lure people into thinking it must be good quality.
I live in Europe. As far as I know we have no problems here, nothing in the news and such. Fortunately my beloved furriends rarely get canned food or pouch stuff (from either Whiskas or a local warehouse brand - “Spinner” imported by N.V. Copimex), and should not be in danger. But I do monitor their eating habits and health well.
Maybe people should consider suing for damages. Pets are not “belongings”, they are beloved household members.
My dog is very sick from eating the can dog food. PetPride. I just bought it last week and he kept getting sick, I didn’t think of the dog food till
I saw it on tv. I am taking him to his vet today
I hope they will pay the bill and my dog lives they need to compinsate all of us. I hope my dog gets better he can’t walk keeps throwing up and I have to carring him around and give him water.
Isn’t there something someone can do to the companies? Make them pay the medical bills? This definetly sounds like something that should have consequences. My dog has the Nutro brand pouch food, luckily, the product code showed it was safe. If we had kept buying the food..? That would have been horrid. We already had a great deal with cancer and him, this wouldv’e made everything worse. I’m so sorry for those who have lost their loved pets.
I lost my cat snuggles two months ago, he ate pet pride, priority and iams wet cat food, it’s so sad he had to die, he lost his apitiet, threw up, and lost enery, I feel so sad knowing he was posioned, my poor baby. Sheila
I’m a Canadian looking for help. First, my deepest sympathy to those whoo have lost their beloved pets
as this company obviously dithered and ignored basic safety procedures. I only hope there’s going to be a great
class action lawsuit and that they’re forced to pay so much money that this acts as a deterrent to other
corporate hoodlums.
Secondly - I have tried everywhere to get the information I need and all I get is a referral to Menu Foods website
which I can’t access- too old software I guess. And their posted help lines are perpetually busy or not operational.
Does anyone have the lot numbers for President’s Choice pouches and cans and, if so, could you please post them on
this site? That’s the only food our beloved domestic tyrant feline has agreed to eat and if her stuff is on the list,
we’re lining up a visit to the veterinarian.
With thanks, Sky
Wayyyy prior to this my cat only Vet told me she had MANY patients who all suffered from the same disease (sorry, it escapes me now) and they ALL were IAMS eaters. Therefore, she DID NOT recommend it. This is a professional opinion that I pass along.
This is FYI for any Iams eaters out there. I have yet to check my Science Diet cans. I pray that my cats are well.
My deepest sympathies to any and all fur parents and furries who have passed away or who are ill now. I pray for some healing of your broken hearts.
Let us all send each other prayers and strength.

i have 3 babies elvis dot and fluffy

equality cat food canned
friskies canned and dry
and a 150 gm sample of preformance ultra
was wondering if the wiskas kitty treats are also affected in this case..
i have been going around in a maze is there a link besides menu foods which is at this time stagnint that has a complete list for canada?
ty for your time .
my prayers to those whohave lost there babies.
Our daughter’s cat came down sick late last week. To make a long story short, after a trip to the vet and $282.00 later, he is much better, but imagine my surprise when I discover that what we thought was accidental poisoning from who knows where (he lives out doors), we were the ones administering the poison everytime we opened a pouch of Special Kitty. My daughter is a college student and really could not afford to take Whiskers to the vet, but he is her pet, what choice did she have? We have still not been able to get through to Menu Foods. I think that because animals were the ones effected they just don’t care like they should.
well we must all stay together, a law siut should be there… ty sheila
I also lost my beloved cat Zoe Marie on March 14th. For seven years all she would eat was Special Kitty. I purchased at least 24 to 36 pouches every couple of weeks. She started acting a little strange last Monday the 12th of March and would not eat but continued to drink lots of water. By Tuesday evening she was walking very stiffly like she was in pain in her hips. She got in her bed and I covered her up, for she felt cold to me. I used a dropper and force fed her some water and milk. I knew she was weak because she hadn`t eaten since Monday. All the while she purred as I rubbed her head. On Wednesday I knew she wasn`t gonna make it. Her body was stiff and she no longer moved at all when I called out her name, so I just sat and held her little paw and told her I loved her. We buried her at Noon on Wednesday March 14th. If I had suspected that she was going to die or knew what I do now I would have taken her on to the vet. Once before she wouldn`t eat ( back 3 -4 years ago)but recovered in a day or two. At first I just thought she was being finicky as usual. I didn`t know I was the one making her sick.
I heard on the news (CNN) that for 3 weeks this company tested the products on animals and that several had died. Tell me why then they waited until Friday March 17th to tell the public. I did not hear anything about it until late Saturday night on our late news. Of course I wrote down the website and first thing Sunday morning logged onto it and was appalled. I immediately called the 800 number. It took over 45 minutes to get through and then 10-12 minutes on hold. But I did talk to representitive and confirmed that I did have the recalled pouches of Special Kitty US. She informed me to hold onto them and that the company would indeed contact me. She also apologised for the loss of my pet and asked me several questions about my cat and her habits.
I am waiting to see if they do indeed contact me. I just DO NOT want to see any more pets put through what my Zoe Marie must have endured. Thank you letting me put my anger into words. Rhonda
so sad.. we have lost our pets, I didn’t keep any of the food, but am passing my info to many.. I too feed my cat water thru an eye dropper several times a day. all his functions just shut down… be bloated up, knew it was time to give him a hug after a week, I tried most everything, he is now in heaven
For my fellow Canadian pet lover - I found a site from an Oregon pet hospital,
http://www.banfield.net and they say Whiskas, Friskies, Fancy Feast and Sheba are all OK.
My heart breaks for others who have lost their pets and all because this company
obviously didn’t care enough to do due diligence and alert consumers.

hope that helps you dear
deborah furber northbay ontario.
As I read the responses to this most horrible situation, I found myself crying for those who have lost their pets (their ‘children’)and everyone else who is struggling with their desperate attempts to not only save their healthy pets, but find answers to questions.
My cat eats a diet dry food that we buy from our vet, but she does get a few treats once in a while….FELINE GREENIES……..anyone heard anything about this product? No more treats for my cat until I know for sure that they are completely safe! Thanks, Lynn
I have two 5 month old siamese kittens that have been eating Special Kitty pouches ever since I first brought them home in December.
When I went to Wal-Mart Saturday to stock up on more pouches, I noticed all the shelves for Special Kitty were empty. Knowing something must not be right, I asked the guy working in the pet department and he informed me that it had been recalled due to kidney failure and death in cats.
I contacted my vet first thing Monday morning because Trouble and Charlie were both drinking incredible amounts of water but not eating hardly at all, especially Trouble. Trouble had also started hacking and vomiting by Sunday night. My vet advised me to bring them both in immediately when he found out what food they had been eating.
Fortunately for Charlie, the antibiotics he had been on due to a reaction from his rabies shot helped protect him against the contaminated food.
Trouble, however, is in the early stages of kidney failure. His BUN and creatinine numbers on his bloodwork were through the roof. His protein level was very low because of the decreased kidney function.
The vet began subcutaneous fluid injections on him yesterday and also an antibiotic. He must continue with the fluid injections for the next couple of days to begin with. Thank goodness, the vet feels that we will be able to get him back to healthy since he is in the early stages instead of latter.
The bill for just yesterday was $257…and I have no idea how much the next few days will entail. I’m just glad that they are able to treat him at this point.
I am so very sorry for you guys that were not fortunate enough to catch your beloved pets’ reactions in time. I won’t lie and say I’m not scared to death for Trouble still…not until I see him healthy again.
I certainly hope Menu Foods owns up to their negligence and assumes responsibility for the unnecessary heartache and bills they have caused so many of us.
For Deborah - thank you so much for the codes and information. Of course, we had
some of those pouches (which are now residing in the trash) and we’ve now got Her
Imperial Royal Highness, the Empress of All She Surveys, going into the vet tomorow
for blood tests for kidney function and also for urine tests. I, for one, would like
to know what else Menu Foods Income Trust has in its portfolio so I can inflict a
level of financial pain by refusing to purchase any of their products. Apparently
the cat food business is only 11% of their total income. Of course, the undoubted
class action suits may put another dent in the piggy bank.
Again, Deborah, my thanks - I should have known it would be North Bay girl who had
all the information I needed!

yes skye myself also… we are all suffering so much for lossing our beloved animals or worry they might have been feed the food, either not a great thing, my heart goes out to all
yes skye myself also… so i submit my feelings, now the web sight said seems you have said that already!
Rumors are saying the FDA is admitting over 1000 cats and dogs have died now.
Another rumor is that there might be even more brands affected that havent been disclosed yet.
Here’s a site that has also been updating their list of recalls:
http://www.howl911.com/petfoodrecall.htm#foods
I see that there are finally some class action suits being filed and if you have some of the comtaminated food and vet bills you’re in luck.Trouble is there are alot of people who found out too late about the recall and lost thier pets before they could get them to the vet.So now what didthese pets all die for nothing?
Here’s a note about some foods not affected by the recall.
According to CNN, a lawsuit has now been filed.

According to our localnews outlets, yesterday (March 24) Menu Foods EXPANDED its list of foods
being recalled. Has anyone been to their site today to see what new lines or foods have been
added to their list? We saw their live press conference yesterday - a total horror show of
evasions, dodging, weaving and vague answers - they’re not even admitting that the NY lab that
discovered the rodenticide in the wheat protein is right - they’re still saying that other labs
now have to be trained to do similar testing! Oh yeah - but they’re in the business because they
really really like animals.

PET FOOD RECALL: UPDATED INFORMATION FOR VETERINARIANS
> Those concerned may want to bring this information to their veterinarians:

>
> PET FOOD RECALL: UPDATED INFORMATION FOR VETERINARIANS
>
> LAKEWOOD, Colo. - In response to the recent national pet food recall, the
> American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) has collected the
> following information for veterinarians in regards to the treatment of
> animals that have ingested the recalled food.
>
> * On Friday, March 23, 2007 a press release from the New York State
> Department of Agriculture and Markets (www.agmkt.state.ny.us/release)
> stated
> that the New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker and
> Cornell
> University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Donald F. Smith announced
> that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified
> Aminopterin
> as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods, the manufacturer
> of
> the many brands of dog and cat food that are currently the subject of a
> nationwide recall.
>
> * The Food Laboratory received the pet food samples from a
> toxicologist
> at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell
> University,
> where testing has been underway to try to identify the cause of kidney
> failure in dogs and cats that consumed the recalled brands of pet food. At
> Cornell’s request, the Food Laboratory tested the samples for poisons and
> toxins, and identified Aminopterin in the pet food samples at a level of
> at
> least 40 parts per million.
>
> * Aminopterin is a folic acid inhibitor found in some rodenticides
> available outside the USA. It is not available in the US as a rodenticide.
> Aminopterin is a 4-amino analog of folic acid. It was originally used as
> an
> antineoplastic agent in the late 1940’s but has been superseded by
> methotrexate, a related but less toxic folic acid analog. At high doses,
> methotrexate results in acute renal failure and crystalluria due to
> desposition of 7-hydroxymethotrexate in the renal tubules. Aminopterin
> toxicity is thought to be similar and dose dependent.
>
> * These findings and any relationship to recent pet deaths have not
> been
> confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration. An announcement from the
> FDA
> is forthcoming. We need to be cautious as the finding of Aminopterin is
> significant but there could be other compounds yet unknown in the diet as
> well.
>
> * Recommendations for testing animals have essentially not changed.
> There is no blood test available for Aminopterin. Pets that have eaten the
> recalled food whether showing signs of illness (lethargy, vomiting,
> diarrhea, anorexia, etc) or asymptomatic should be seen by their
> veterinarian and have a complete blood count, biochemistry panel and
> urinalysis performed. Additional testing may include assessment for
> significant proteinuria, urine culture, imaging, etc.
>
> * Treatment recommendations have not changed. According to Dr. Richard
> E
> Goldstein DVM DACVIM DECVIM-CA, Associate Professor of Medicine at Cornell
> University, azotemic pets should be treated with fluids to promote
> hydration, and diuresis in order to dissolve and flush out crystals from
> the
> tubules. Aminopterin produces crystals within the renal tubules that are
> most soluble in an acidic urine pH thus a target urine pH above 7
> (achieved
> with fluid therapy and alkalinizing agents including sodium bicarbonate)
> might be beneficial in managing these patients. Several medications such
> as
> antioxidants and folic acid may be administered but their true beneficial
> affects are unproven when given long after the initial exposure to the
> toxin.
>
> * Bone-marrow suppression is a concern with any folic acid inhibiting
> agent and a complete blood cell count should be monitored in these
> patients
> as well as renal function.
>
> * If a patient with anuric or oliguric acute renal failure is not
> responding to appropriate therapy, veterinarians should promptly consider
> contacting a small animal internist with the American College of
> Veterinary
> Internal Medicine (www.ACVIM.org) in their local community for case
> consultation and possible referral. Hemodialysis can be utilized for
> severely affected patients and is available at a limited number of
> veterinary teaching hospitals.
>
> * Duration of treatment in patients which may have renal failure due
> to
> ingestion of the recalled food is unknown at this time and obviously will
> vary between patients. Long term effects on renal function are unknown but
> based on limited experience to date, at least partial renal recovery is
> anticipated. Patients succumbing to illness should be necropsied and
> tissues
> saved in formalin for histopathology to determine cause of death.
>
> * Samples for histopathology can be submitted to The Iowa State
> University Veterinary Diagnostic laboratory (www.vdpam.iastate.edu) or The
> Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) at Cornell University
> (www.diag.center.vetcornell.edu).
>
> * Samples of the recalled food should be held for possible analysis.
> Opened food should be disposed of so there is no chance of further
> consumption. Pet owners can contact the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
> Consumer Complaint Coordinator at:
>
> * The FDA has provided the following case definition for field
> investigation/cases: veterinary-documented renal failure, necropsy results
> if animal died, food consumed within 1 week of death (illness), and
> intact,
> unopened cans of the food. If veterinarians suspect that a case meets this
> general case definition, FDA has requested that you contact them at the
> following e-mail address:
