VORHEES, NEW JERSEY - A tabby cat named “Miracle” has been caught as a stowaway on a SUV in New Jersey, authorities say.
Miracle, a grey and white kitten, has spent most of the 8 to 9 months of his life travelling the country’s highways by hitch-hiking and stowing away in trunks and cabins. While he has not been caught until recently, he has taken rides with at least twenty to thirty unsuspecting humans. He has visited states along the east coast, from New York all the way down to Florida. He was on his way back to his family in Maine when he was caught just before Christmas.
In New Jersey, Code 39:4-59 states, No person shall stand in a highway for the purpose of or while soliciting a ride from the operator of any vehicle other than an omnibus or a street car. Therefore, Miracle felt that he could get away with just taking the rides without solicitation. Currently, no charges have been pressed against the courageous feline for his actions as a stowaway. Instead, the kitten is being cared for and plans are being made to adopt him out to a caring home. It is not known whether he will be returned to his original family.
When asked about the kitten’s demeanor upon being caught stowing away, Karen Dixon-Aquino, director of the Animal Welfare Association in Voorhees stated, “He was pretty freaked out.”
